Our habitat banking approach to BNG

Habitat banking is the creation of strategically located habitats that integrate into and strengthen Nature Recovery Networks. By creating habitats before any nature loss is caused by development this approach makes available a 'bank' of BNG Units ready for sale to the development sector, providing a greater level of security for buyers.

This approach is part of our strategy to delivery a 'BNG gold standard,' going beyond the minimum 10% BNG and striving to deliver at least 20% BNG locally, while also strategically targeting our BNG into a bigger picture of nature’s recovery and making sure local communities are connected to nature.  These habitats are secured forever (beyond the mandatory 30 years) making sure BNG is additional to existing mechanisms, funding, and initiatives.

The grid below shows the regional locations of The Wildlife Trusts' BNG habitat banks in England, as well as the applicable Local Planning Authority, and the type of BNG Units on sale. If you cannot see off-site habitat compensation listed close to your development site, please contact your local Wildlife Trust to find our more about our BNG services in your area. If you are a nationwide developer, operating in several geographic regions and looking for a national BNG solution at scale, please contact us below.
