Since 2015 we have worked in partnership with Siemens Plc to encourage its employees to connect with nature by linking up with their local Wildlife Trusts and supporting local communities. Siemens have also received advice on greening their office grounds across four UK sites to help boost biodiversity and bring employees closer to nature.
Keen to help drive net zero initiatives and manage its environment and community impacts, Siemens are currently providing value-in-kind consultancy to help us to develop our Renewable Energy Strategy. Last year Siemens donated value-in-kind consultancy to examine the feasibility of installing electric vehicle charging points across Wildlife Trust nature reserves and visitor centres. This has been an invaluable resource, which contributes to Wildlife Trusts ‘getting our own house in order’, a commitment in our Strategy 2030, and helping us to reduce our scope 1 and 3 emissions, as we tackle the nature and climate emergencies.
The assessment advised on requirements to balance the load of electricity taken from the grid against what is generated on site, cabling capacity, roof suitability for solar PV installations, considerations for contractors, and any unforeseen costs such as connection upgrades. In addition, the report provided a guide for the next steps and potential financing and funding options to deliver this transformation.
“This transformation is the result of a huge body of work. We’re extremely grateful that Siemens has given us a clearly defined plan of what our organisation needs to do to deliver our ambitious vision.”Climate and Nature-Based Solutions Officer, at The Wildlife Trusts
Engaging Siemens employees with nature and understanding the benefits
Time spent in wildlife rich environments boosts health and wellbeing. Every year, hundreds of Siemens employees spend time with their local Wildlife Trust, getting involved in a range of activities to improve their local natural spaces. These Wild Work Days - as we call them – involve employees undertaking physical tasks, learning new skills, connecting with team-mates in a new environment and giving something back to their communities. Being outside in nature enables them to take time to think, slow down and reflect.
They return to work feeling happier and healthier; more than 81% reported an improved sense of wellbeing following their time spent with their local Wildlife Trust. Many have gone on to become regular volunteers with their Trust, sustaining the benefits in the long term. Happy, healthy employees are more productive and stay longer with their employer.
Getting to know their local Trust has also enabled many Siemens sites to broaden their relationship for example by improving their work environments for wildlife.
