A once-in-a-generation opportunity

The Wildlife Trusts nationally and Northumberland Wildlife Trust have an opportunity to secure the future of Rothbury Estate in Northumberland by purchasing and developing it into one of the largest areas for people and nature in England. But we need your help to raise £30 million over the next two years.

Stretching over 3,800 hectares, the estate is home to special wildlife like red squirrels and curlew.

Thanks to generous support, we have already secured an upland area of the Rothbury Estate, which includes the much-loved Simonside Hills. Taking the next step and acquiring the whole estate would allow us to preserve its rich heritage for future generations, create a sustainable future for local farmers and avoid the land being broken up into multiple ownerships, which would make access and enjoyment for the public more difficult.

By securing the entire estate and working with local farmers and communities, we hope to create a showcase for nature's recovery on a vast scale.

Let's make history together

You can help make our vision for the Rothbury Estate a reality for people and nature. Your gift will support work to:

Secure the future of the Estate

We will preserve the rich heritage of the Estate for future generations, pioneer regenerative agriculture and create a sustainable future for local farmers. We will also enhance public access so people can continue to enjoy this wonderful place.

Protect vital habitats

The estate’s vast size offers an unparalleled opportunity to safeguard woodlands, wetlands, river corridors and diverse moorland habitats. From preserving globally important peatlands that lock up carbon to creating safe havens for red squirrels, pine martens and golden eagles, your donation will support the restoration of these vital habitats.

All funds raised - including any funds raised over our target amount - will go towards nature’s recovery at the Rothbury Estate.

In the event we don’t raise enough funds to purchase the entire Estate or we are unable to complete the purchase for any reason, funds raised will go towards nature's recovery in the Simonside Hills and surrounding areas.
